With Chistmas quickly approaching, it seems such a wonderful time to contemplate on memories of Christmas past. Do you have a favorite Christmas memory from your childhood? Maybe a Christmas disappointment?
Share the difference in Christmas celebrations when you were a child and the celebrations of today.
I remember Christmas when I was a child. Christmas Eve we would always visit at the Grandparents home for a while, then when we got back to our house, all of us would get to open 1 Christmas gift. It was usually new pj's and we would wear them to bed so when we got up on Christmas morning we were all so adorable. But the 4 of us were just little cuties at anytime. One Christmas Dad and Mom got the boys a race track. It was so funny.
Dad built a table out of plywood to set the track up on. And the funny part was, we knew what they had gotten because you could hear Dad downstairs in the basement running the cars around the track. He even had to replace one of the cars because he broke one. I think he bought the racetrack more for him then the boys. He sure needed to do a lot of "testing to make sure it worked" before Christmas Day. Jody and I got a little table with chairs and little cribs for our baby dolls. Everything was set up in the basement for us to play all day on Christmas. That is a really fun memory for me.
Another Christmas season, I was probably 9 or 10, I remember Mom and Aunt Gail being in Dad & Mom's bedroom. I was in there, just sitting in the floor listening to them talk. The conversation was about what Christams presents they had gotten for each child. Now Mom pipes up with "and I got the girls a typewritter (child's -- not a real one). And then she realized I was still sitting in there. Her hand flies to her mouth and she tells me, "don't let your daddy know that I let that slip".
Christmas was so much fun as a child. We didn't get tons and tons of stuff back then like children seem to do now. But we were happy and content. Tony always seemed to like the boxes the presents came in more than the gift itself. He would spend hours "building" things out of the boxes. And he had a really good imagination for doing that.
Simpler days....I miss those. Everything now can become so commercialized if we let it, and so many times it seems that everyone is trying to outdo everyone else. My Christmas wish each and every year now is simply that we can all be together, spend time with each other. Our family has grown so large, the numbers have jumped so drastically. Now it's not about the presents, or Santa, or anything but being together for one more Christmas. I love my family. I miss them so much. Everyday brings changes. And every day the children grow up a little more. As our children grow, please give them special loving memories to grow up with. That is a wonderful gift in itself for a child.
